The Institute of Biomedical Engineering as founded as an academic unit at the University for Health Sciences, Medical Informatics and Technology (UMIT), with the mission of defining and establishing a discipline fusing life sciences with engineering.

" Engineering  meets  Biology  and  Medicine "

The goal of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering is to advance fundamental understanding of how medical and biological systems operate and to develop effective biomedical technologies for applications across a wide spectrum of societal needs including breakthroughs in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.  The innovative research program created by the Institute of Biomedical Engineering reflects this emphasis on integrating biomedical sciences with a quantitative, systems-oriented engineering analysis and synthesis approach.

The Institute of Biomedical Engineering is covering two research areas:

  • Biomedical Signal Processing, Modeling and Imaging
  • Clinical Bioinformatics and Computational Systems Biology

Collaborations with cutting-edge international research institutions, with industry and with clinicans and medical doctors offers unique opportunities for the life sciences and the biomedical informatics and engineering discipline. Located at the UMIT/EWZ campus in Hall in Tyrol, the Institute of Biomedical Engineering do have strong local collaborations with research groups at the Innsbruck Medical University and at the Leopold-Franzens University Innsbruck, with the HITT (Health Information Technologies Tirol) and KMT (Kompetenzzentrum Medizin Tirol) competence centre and with the ARC Seibersdorf Research GmbH, Biomedical Enginneering / eHealth Systems Division.

About Biomedical Engineering

_____________________________________________

Biomedical Engineering is a discipline that advances knowledge in engineering, biology and medicine, and improves human health through cross-disciplinary activities that integrate the engineering sciences with the biomedical sciences and clinical practice. It includes:

  • The acquisition of new knowledge and understanding of living systems through the innovative and substantive application of experimental and analytical techniques based on the engineering sciences.

  • The development of new devices, algorithms, processes and systems that advance biology and medicine and improve medical practice and health care delivery.
